From my long-term experience, I can say that life with a dog is much nicer and of higher quality, but for a nice and orderly shared life, it is necessary for us to make an effort and to train the dog well, that is, to adapt the dog to our lifestyle. It will not be pleasant for us if the dog excessively barks, if it bites the family members it lives with, if it tears things around the house, if it growls at the housemates or guests, if it wakes us up during the night, if it ignores our commands and does whatever it pleases... and in that case, instead of enjoying our pet, we will have a creature in the house that constantly irritates us and eventually, we will lose patience for it. The most common mistakes that dog owners make, consciously or unconsciously, are: rewarding and punishing the dog at the wrong time, lack of consistency, perseverance and patience.
REWARDING THE DOG AT THE WRONG TIME
Inexperienced owners most often relax when they get a little, cute puppy in the house and simply find it sweet whatever the puppy does, so they unconsciously encourage it with petting, cuddling and rewarding it while it barks, chews, pulls or tears something..., and that is a big mistake. Dogs learn the best by praise and by the behavior of the owner they understand whether they are doing the right thing or not. If we encourage them while doing something they should not, we are sending them the message that what they are doing is good and the puppy will continue to behave like that. When they grow, and they grow fast, we will not be pleased in the company of such a dog. For that reason, we should warn the puppy from the first day of its arrival in our home, no matter how cute it is and how much we have grown to love it, with a short command in a certain tone of voice that should not be the same as when we want to praise it.
PUNISHING THE DOG AT THE WRONG TIME
We should only warn the dog when we catch it in the act, while doing something it should not. If we did not see it when it made a mistake, even if it was five minutes earlier, we will achieve nothing by scolding it later. The dog simply will not understand why we are warning it and over time it will become confused. A great example of this is making waste where it should not. If we notice that the dog has made waste where it should not have, but we did not see it, it will not make any sense to scold it later. It will be even more confusing for the dog and will not understand what we want from it. The dog should be rewarded when it behaves correctly and warned when it behaves incorrectly and in that way, it will understand what we want from it and we will be able to enjoy the company of our well-trained pet.
CONSISTENCY
We often make mistakes when it comes to consistency. If we don't want the dog to do something, for example, to climb on the bed, then it should always be forbidden. We can't forbid him a few times, then let it be, and then forbid it again. All members of the family should be consistent and stick to the rules.
PERSEVERANCE
We must be persistent and persevering if we want our dog to accept new habits or commands. Many expect that it is enough to practice with the dog for a day or two and then lose patience and eventually give up on further learning, which is wrong. We should practice with the dog every day until he masters what we expect from him. Perseverance and persistence are the key to success in this case.
PATIENCE
Before any exercise with the dog, we should arm ourselves with patience and work with him slowly and calmly. Some exercises the dog will master faster, some slower, but if we are persistent, patient and properly train him, he will master everything we ask of him. To avoid losing patience before we start learning a command or behavior to the dog, it is necessary to inform ourselves about dog training, work with a dog that is not tired and have nothing else drawing its attention and we should not forget the reward every time the dog does what we expect from him.
