Bernese mountain dogs, huskies, Samoyeds and all other dogs that come from colder regions particularly enjoy winter. For them, winter is the best time of the year and they can be outside as much as they want without any special preparation.
However, some dogs are not resistant to the cold and they need to be prepared for cold days.
Our little ones equally love to run around in the snow as well as on the grass, but the time they spend outside should be adjusted. In winter, we should take them out a few times a day for shorter intervals so that the cold weather does not cause any health problems.
STRONGER FOOD FOR DOGS DURING WINTER
During winter, our pets use more energy to accumulate heat so they need to be fed more frequently and with more calories. Food should be increased by 25-30% compared to regular meals, but we should not overdo it so that they do not become overweight.
ADDITIONS TO DIET DURING WINTER
Puppies, older, and sick dogs will probably need some additions to their diet during the winter and we will give it to them exclusively on the advice of a veterinarian. Not on our own.
CLOTHES FOR DOGS
Small dogs, whether short-haired or long-haired, have a harder time dealing with cold so we need to provide them with comfortable and warm clothes for winter. Little ones who live in apartments are usually shorn so they don't have enough hair to keep them warm during cold days, and genetically they are not prepared to endure low temperatures, so we need to warm them up. Coats that they wear when they are outside should be removed as soon as they enter the apartment and dogs that are particularly sensitive to cold weather, like greyhounds or dogs from warm regions, should wear a jacket or sweater while they are inside.
FOOT CARE DURING WINTER
In cities, a lot of salt and various chemicals are spread on the streets during snowy days, so it is necessary to wash our four-legged friend's paws every time they come back from a walk to avoid irritation. We should also trim the hair between the pads on their paws because that's where the most snow stays. Unlike dry weather when dogs walk more on concrete and hard surfaces that wear down their nails, in winter the snow will not be able to wear them down so we must regularly trim them so that they do not break or crack. Before this task we will consult with a groomer so as not to harm our beloved friend.
Utoplimo se i bezbrižno uživajmo u čarobnim zimskim danima 😊
