VACATIONING WITH A DOG IN GREECE
The holiday season is well underway, and one of the favorite destinations for people from Serbia is Greece. In this text, I will present everything you need to know if you're going to the seaside with your dog.
PREPARING FOR THE TRIP WITH YOUR DOG
Before embarking on the journey, the fundamental rule is to ensure that your dog is properly vaccinated, free from internal parasites, and protected from external parasites. Your dog's health is also of utmost importance, so consult with your veterinarian if your dog is on any medication, and make sure to bring an ample supply of medications for the entire stay at the seaside.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR CROSSING THE BORDER TO EU COUNTRIES
Greece is a member of the EU, and for crossing the border with your dog, you'll need to prepare the following documents in addition to the passport, which should include all vaccinations and owner details: a certificate of your pet's health status issued by a veterinary inspector and the TITAR TEST, which is a blood serum test measuring the rabies antibody titer performed 30 days after the rabies vaccination, and this is issued by the Pasteur Institute in Novi Sad. TITAR TEST, tj. serum krvi na visinu titra koji se radi 30 dana posle vakcine protiv besnila, a koju izdaje Pasterov zavod u Novom Sadu.
I have listed the necessary documents for dogs according to the regulations for non-commercial movement of dogs to EU countries, and it's essential to have them ready and with you to avoid any potential inconvenience if the border official requests to see all the documentation for your dog.
ACCOMMODATION IN GREECE
Greece is a country where you shouldn't have problems bringing your dog along, as most accommodation units allow pets. However, it wouldn't hurt to inform them before your trip that you will be accompanied by your four-legged friend. In my case, the accommodation price was not affected even though I have stayed with dogs several times on the Greek seaside, and I hope the same goes for you.
DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES IN GREECE
All the beaches I've visited in Greece, and as far as I know, most beaches across Greece, allow the entry and stay of dogs. I'm confident that you'll find convenient spots with shade for both you and your pet on the wide, beautiful beaches. Remember to bring fresh drinking water for your dog and make sure it's always accessible. Also, carry poop bags to clean up after your dog.
I would like to mention that there are many stray dogs on the Greek coast, and they often come to the beaches. It would be best to have your dog on a leash to prevent it from running in an unfamiliar direction following other dogs. You can let your dog off the leash only when going into the water and when there are no other dogs in sight.
PRACTICAL TIPS
Don't feed your dog a few hours before the trip.
Bring enough of the food your dog is used to eating for the entire stay.
During breaks on the journey, take your dog out of the car. Never leave them alone in a parked car.
Check if there's access to emergency veterinary assistance at your chosen destination.
Always carry your dog's passport, which should contain records of all vaccinations and the dog's health status.
Provide shade for your pet on the beach and allow them to cool off in the sea as needed.
